Several state-qualified guide companies are based in the Ax-les-Thermes valley, including the Bureau des Guides des Pyrénées Ariégeoises and Ariège Canyon Aventure, running guided canyoning outings ranging from a first family introduction to technical routes reserved for experienced participants.
Rando Aqua: the no-rope introduction
A route accessible to everyone, with no big rappels or dizzying jumps — designed to introduce canyoning from a young age (from 7 years old) or as a family. A great first contact with the activity.
Canyon des Mounges: the guided first step
A half-day outing designed as a first approach to canyoning in the Ax valleys, supervised by qualified instructors.
Canyon d’Orlu: the signature route
The canyon not to miss near Ax-les-Thermes. The river winds between giant granite boulders, right in the heart of the Orlu nature reserve, beneath a centuries-old beech forest. The gorge stays moderately enclosed and obstacles are never very high, but the river’s strong flow makes for a lively, memorable descent.
Canyon de l’Escales: the sporty route
Reserved for seasoned adventurers, this route features impressive abseils and technical passages in an isolated, wild setting.
Practical information
Every outing is led by qualified guides or instructors, who provide the technical equipment (neoprene wetsuit, helmet, harness) and adjust the route to the group’s level.
Canyoning season generally runs from June to September, once spring snowmelt has passed and water levels are safer — July and August offer the most reliable conditions. Please confirm exact dates, water levels and safety conditions directly with your guide company before your trip.
A typical day
