Which Pyrenees Ski Resort Should You Choose? Ax 3 Domaines vs Saint-Lary, Grand Tourmalet, Font-Romeu and Luchon

In the Pyrenees, Ax 3 Domaines is not the biggest ski area, but it is one of the best placed for skiing on a moderate budget and staying in a real thermal town. Here we compare it honestly with Saint-Lary and the Grand Tourmalet (around Bagnères-de-Bigorre), the two largest areas in the range, as well as Font-Romeu and Luchon-Superbagnères. For the general method, read our guide to the criteria for choosing a ski resort in the Pyrenees. Coming from the UK? See our country-by-country ski guide for British skiers.

Adult prices. The Ax day pass is the 2026–2027 price from the official site, checked on 5 October 2026. The Ax 6-day pass and all other prices are high season 2025/26. Ax is smaller than Saint-Lary and the Grand Tourmalet, but its day pass costs less. It is much bigger than Font-Romeu and Luchon, for a price close to Font-Romeu’s.

Ax vs Saint-Lary

Saint-Lary offers about 25% more pistes (100 km against 80 km) and the biggest vertical drop in this comparison, from the village at 830 m to 2,470 m. A day pass costs €54 there, against €47.50 at Ax (about 14% more), and a 6-day pass €275 against €244. In other words: a little more terrain for a little more money.

Choose Saint-Lary if you want as many kilometres as possible. Choose Ax if you prefer a simpler area to get around, a tighter budget, or a trip that combines skiing with a thermal town.

Ax vs the Grand Tourmalet (Bagnères-de-Bigorre)

The Grand Tourmalet joins La Mongie, a resort at the foot of the slopes, with Barèges, an authentic village. It is the largest ski area in the French Pyrenees, with about 100 km of pistes and a summit at 2,500 m. An adult day pass starts at €53, against €47.50 at Ax.

The neighbouring town of Bagnères-de-Bigorre is, like Ax, a thermal town: its Aquensis spa offers thermal water in the town centre. You reach La Mongie by bus from Bagnères. Ax’s advantage: you can ski and bathe without leaving town, with a cheaper pass. The Grand Tourmalet’s advantage: a bigger and higher ski area.

Ax vs Luchon-Superbagnères

Luchon is Ax’s closest rival for "skiing and thermal baths". It is a thermal town about 1h30 from Toulouse, like Ax, and its gondola links the town centre to Superbagnères (1,800 m) in 8 to 9 minutes. The ski area has about 33 km of pistes and 28 pistes.

Luchon costs less than Ax: €36 a day and €198 for 6 days, against €47.50 and €244. In return, Ax has more than twice as many kilometres of piste (80 km against 33 km). Choose Luchon for the lowest budget or a short break. Choose Ax if you want a more varied ski area over a week.

Ax vs Font-Romeu

Font-Romeu – Pyrénées 2000 stands out for its sunshine (advertised at over 3,000 hours a year), its roughly 500 snow cannons and a very large cross-country network. The resort has the Famille Plus label. Its alpine area is smaller (46 km, 44 pistes), though, for a pass price almost identical to Ax’s: €48.50 a day and €249.50 for 6 days, against €47.50 and €244.

Another difference: Font-Romeu is further from Toulouse (about 2h30 by road, against 1h30 for Ax), and its hot-spring baths, at Dorres, Llo or Saint-Thomas, are in neighbouring villages, not in the resort. Choose Font-Romeu for the sun and cross-country skiing. Choose Ax for about 70% more alpine pistes at a similar price.

Skiing and thermal baths: which town should you choose?

Font-Romeu

Ax and Luchon are the two towns where you can go from the baths to the pistes without a car. Ax has the advantage of a bigger ski area; Luchon the advantage of a cheaper pass.

When to choose Ax-les-Thermes

  • You want a much bigger ski area than Luchon or Font-Romeu, without paying the price of Saint-Lary or the Grand Tourmalet.

  • You are looking for a ski and thermal trip, in a lively town rather than a purpose-built resort.

  • You are travelling with family or with beginner and intermediate skiers (the area has the Famille Plus label).

  • You are travelling via Toulouse: Ax is about 1h30 away by car, and the Skirail train also takes about 1h30.

Choose Saint-Lary or the Grand Tourmalet instead if kilometres of piste and altitude matter more than budget, Luchon for the lowest price, and Font-Romeu for the sun.

Ascou-Pailhères suits a quiet day on a small budget, but with few snow cannons its conditions depend mostly on natural snow. Porté-Puymorens suits skiers who want a quieter mid-sized area over the Puymorens pass. Beille is for cross-country skiing and walks, and Le Chioula for a snowshoe outing in the forest with children.

What about Andorra?

Grandvalira is the largest ski area in the Pyrenees (about 215 km, 143 pistes, top altitude 2,822 m), with a day pass of around €66 (to be confirmed), noticeably more than at Ax. Ax offers something different: a French thermal town with natural hot springs, instead of a purpose-built ski resort.
