How to Choose a Ski Resort in the Pyrenees: 9 Criteria, from Travel Time to Snow Conditions
The French Pyrenees have more than thirty ski resorts, from small village resorts to areas of over 100 km of pistes. They mostly attract visitors from nearby, so the journey weighs heavily in the choice. Here are nine criteria for comparing them, then a quick guide to which resort leads on each one. To see the criteria applied side by side, with prices, read our comparison of Ax 3 Domaines with Saint-Lary, the Grand Tourmalet, Font-Romeu and Luchon. If you are coming from the UK, our country-by-country ski guide for British skiers puts these criteria in a wider context.
The 9 criteria
| Criterion | The question to ask | Benchmarks |
|---|---|---|
1. Travel time |
How long are you willing to drive, and for how many days? |
From Toulouse, Ax and Luchon are about 1h30 away and Font-Romeu about 2h30; a short weekend copes badly with long journeys |
2. Budget |
What does the lift pass cost, and for how many days? |
From €29 a day at Ascou-Pailhères to €54 at Saint-Lary |
3. Size of the ski area |
How many kilometres of piste do you need to avoid getting bored? |
From 15 km at Ascou-Pailhères to 100 km at Saint-Lary and the Grand Tourmalet |
4. Altitude and snow |
Is the area high, well exposed, equipped with snowmaking? |
The higher and more north-facing the area, the longer the snow lasts; always check the snow report |
5. Ability level |
How many green, blue, red and black pistes are there? |
An area with mostly green and blue pistes suits beginners and children |
6. Alpine or cross-country |
Do you want to ski downhill or go for a walk? |
Beille and Le Chioula are cross-country areas; Font-Romeu has the largest cross-country network in the range |
7. Family |
Are there ski schools, gentle slopes and activities for children? |
The Famille Plus label distinguishes several resorts, including Ax 3 Domaines, Font-Romeu and Saint-Lary |
8. Atmosphere and accommodation |
Do you prefer a purpose-built ski resort or a real town? |
A town like Ax offers shops, restaurants and varied accommodation, without skiing from your door |
9. Life off the pistes |
What is there to do on rest days or in bad weather? |
Thermal baths, spas, walks, restaurants: a decisive criterion for a week-long stay |
Which resort leads on each criterion?
| Criterion | Leader | Detail |

Which profile for which resort?
-
A family day out on a small budget: Ascou-Pailhères or Luchon-Superbagnères.
-
A ski and relaxation weekend: Ax 3 Domaines, with the thermal baths in town.
-
A big ski area, more kilometres: Saint-Lary or the Grand Tourmalet (La Mongie – Barèges).
-
Lots of sun and a large cross-country network: Font-Romeu.
-
Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing: the Beille plateau or Le Chioula, near Ax.
These benchmarks give a direction; the current snow report and opening dates decide the rest.
Skiing and thermal baths: a criterion of its own
Some Pyrenean resorts have thermal baths nearby, such as Bagnères-de-Bigorre for the Grand Tourmalet or Luchon for Superbagnères. In Ax-les-Thermes, the Baou gondola leaves from the town, and Les Bains du Couloubret and the free Bassin des Ladres are in the town centre. Our ski and spa guide for Ax-les-Thermes suggests sample days.
